Gun terrorism in the US: Democratic Party politician publicly confronts rival over Texas violence

A Texas Democratic Party politician interrupted state Governor Greg Abbott’s remarks on Wednesday about the latest mass shooting incident in the state. Stepping down from the auditorium seats, Beto O’Rourke pointed in Abbott’s face and accused him of doing “nothing” to reduce violence involving guns.

The latest mass shooting in the small Texas town of Uvalde left 19 children and two teachers dead.

“It’s on you!” O’Rourke fumed at the governor, who was seated at a table on the stage and surrounded by officials including Texas senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, two longtime pro-gun lawmakers.

“It’s totally predictable when you choose to do nothing for the children of this state,” O’Rourke said. “I stand up for the children of this state to prevent this from happening again.”

O’Rourke’s surprising interruption threw the meeting into chaos and put security officials on high alert.

Abbott sat stone-faced a few yards away as O’Rourke, a 2020 US presidential candidate who is challenging Abbott for his position this year, confronted him.

“Sir, you’re out of place,” someone shouted from the O’Rourke stage.

As he refused to move away, the police intervened and voices were raised.

Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, a Republican, yelled at him “you’re a sick son of a bitch (to) come to an agreement like this to make a political question”.

“Why are we letting this happen in this country? Why is this happening in this state, year after year, city after city? O’Rourke asked reporters after leaving the auditorium.
